On the 30th Anniversary of the Takeover of the US Embassy Students Take to the Streets in Protests across Iran

(Editor | Peace with Iran | 4 November 2009) – Today is the 13th of Aban:  the official day Iranians commemorate the student takeover of the US Embassy during the 1979 Revolution.  This year, the 30th anniversary of this historic day,  students also mobilized.  This time they took to the streets to protest their government and to demand their voices be heard and the rights of all Iranians be respected.

Against a  symbolic human screen of protesters images, news footage, and Iranians saying “Ahmadinejad is not my president” captures the struggle of Iranians to have their voices heard since the June 12 presidential elections.  We share the complete video footage above.

I am writing to ask you to take a stand against the atrocities being inflicted on the Iranian people by their current government under the leadership of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Please do not acknowledge this person’s assumed role as President of Iran.

Regardless of the results of the June 12 election in Iran, this individual and his government have exhibited blatant disregard for basic human rights and have broken the international treaties of the Geneva Conventions. Rape, torture, and murder have been thrust upon the Iranian people and their families by the hands of the Iran government.

I ask you to reproach your decision that extends an invitation to Ahmadinejad at the annual General Assembly meeting on September 23rd, 2009. If Ahmadinejad is still allowed to attend, I respectfully ask that you refuse to share council chamber with him and leave the meeting.

The people of Iran have not asked the rest of the world for money, intervention or interference, all they ask is for our support in their struggle for a free, democratic Iran. As representative of your country and its people, I urge you to demonstrate that support and walk out on Ahmadinejad on September 23.

The Right to Peaceful Protest

In the days following Iran’s presidential election on Friday 12 June, many thousands took part in marches and demonstrations across the country, condemning both the process and outcome of the election.Amnesty International calls on the Iranian authorities to allow peaceful demonstrations, to exercise restraint in the policing of any further demonstrations, to stop using the Basij militia to police protests, and to ensure that firearms are not used except as a last resort and where strictly unavoidable in order to protect life.

Following the mass arrests of demonstrators and opposition activists in Iran over recent weeks in connection with the disputed presidential election, Amnesty International has compiled a list of the names or identities of 368 arrested people. Dear Ayatollah Khamenei,

I have been watching the events in Iran over the past number of weeks with serious concern. I have seen peaceful protests attacked, protesters beaten and, in some cases, killed, and read of thousands being arrested.

I call on you to release all those imprisoned for simply exercising their rights to freedom of speech and assembly. For those accused of engaging in criminal acts, I call on you to ensure they receive a fair trial, with no reliance on forced “confessions” and that they are not sentenced to death.

All those imprisoned must be protected from torture and other forms of ill-treatment. To ensure this, you should clarify who is in detention and where they are being held and allow them access to their families and lawyers of their choice.

Finally, I call on you to clarify who has been killed, and to ensure that all deaths at the hands of security forces or in custody are properly and independently investigated and that anyone responsible for abuses is brought to justice promptly and fairly.

The inspiration behind the establishment of the IRANIAN-AMERICAN YOUTH is the heartbreaking tragedy that has befallen Iran, a country where human rights were originally championed but progressively trampled upon.
